Fredericksburg (& Some Alexandria)

January 18, 2017

As I mentioned in my post on Washington DC, I was in Northern Virginia/the greater DC area for a job interview and took the opportunity to see some of the nearby cities. The interview was in Old Town Alexandria, so I spent a little time there and on my way back home stopped in historic Fredericksburg for a few more hours of exploring.

Most of the above photos are from Fredericksburg, as I wanted to enjoy walking through Alexandria without worrying about capturing it on my phone. Both cities have gorgeous historical districts, full of colonial era homes and shops - a plus for me, as the Revolutionary War era is my favourite American time period.

Much of my time in Alexandria was spent driving through the old neighbourhoods or sitting in a coffee pub in the Del Ray district (which has THREE hour free parking - I was ecstatic) reading a newfound favourite book. Fredericksburg, however, warranted more exploration. I walked up and down Caroline Street for a while before stopping in at Riverby Books, an old bookstore that has been on my must visit list for ages.

I took very few photos during this trip so it's difficult to show, but Northern Virginia is one of my favourite places I've been to. I've been to the southeastern area of the state many, many times but have rarely traveled more north, and it's an area I would love to visit more in the future. The very familiar Southern/East Coast culture mixed with loads of old history makes for a fun area to explore, and I hope to spend many more weekends there in the future.
